We were still at the Barnenez cairn complex in Brittany for Beltane. Having just found a deep earth connection at the site, and now feeling rather “at home” with the energies and entities that I felt were around this place, it was time for me to see if there was anything else which would reveal itself. I was in for a bit of a mental workout with the next finding!
Merlin, Herne and The White Hart
I used the dowsing rods to lead me to a place where there was anything that I could learn from, or of energetic significance. Kal and I were hovering around the end of the newer section of the cairn structure – the part that was added secondarily. It was the part which Oona, the french druidess, felt more connected to. And it was the section to which the dowsing rods now re-located me.
Some ten feet away from the cairn’s edge I began to follow an energy line. I was very complicated to follow, but it never went back over itself, so I knew it was tracing a shape. The shape was clear after the first couple of movements, as it was very familiar to me. Itw as clearly a stag’s antlers! I told Kal about the shape and he took up his rods. He traced another different shape – it was a wavy pattern at the point where the antlers would meet the head. Is it a crown? A bracelet? A chain? Some other decoration? We are unsure, but I plump for crown, as something feels “regal” about this pattern, my intuition tells me.
What is the link between a crown or chain, and a stag’s antlers? Something was nagging me – I had seen this image before. When I got back home I began to do some research. A white hart chained is the royal emblem of the English king Richard II. It is also the council emblem for the county of Hertfordshire.
The link between Richard II and Hertforshire is established by his burial with his consort Anne of Bohemia at Kings Langley in Hertfordshire (see this article). His body was later moved to Westminster Abbey, but it was first interred at Kings Langley where the royal family estate was located.
ASIDE: This stag with crown crest is also linked to the Irish family of DOYLE (red stag) and the Scottish clan of GORDON (white stag).
So, why would there be such a link in place? At this stage I’m not coming to any firm conclusions on this one, but I have some ideas. Was there a ritual done during the reign of Richard II to link the energies of those who had been buried here thousands of years before, and to link them to Richard’s reign as king of England? I’m only guessing here, but that is a working theory.
What I do know is that the sheer size of the structure pins the renown energy of those buried here in place.
What is renown energy? Renown energy is the energy produced by the death of a person who has had a life which is well-remembered. It tends to be the life of someone “important”, whose life events are recorded in myth, story or history. They have always been influential, whether during their life or afterwards. Examples would be tribal leaders, kings, shamans, druids, historical figures and moving into the present era – celebrities! Yes, even common-or-garden celebrities are freely given the thought-form energy from the people who worship them, such that it sustains them and empowers them. Sad, but true.
From my dowlsing questions it would seem that there was a link being maintained between something in Hertfordshire, and some person’s renown energy at this site. At some point I may folow this up to find out what in Hertfordshire could be responsible for this link. A visit to Kings Langleywould be likely.

The Merlin Twist
So, back to the story after that historical and speculative diversion. The next thing I found is that Merlin is also associated with this site. His mythology is also maintained by the death energies at the site. I wondered who created this link – one of the people buried here, one of their followers, someone linked to England, perhaps? The answer was even stranger. I was taken back to the antler shape, and when I questioned the meaning of this I was able to refine the answer to “Herne“.
The picture above shows some of the symbols painted or carved in the various chambers of stelae of the site. Notice the horn “U-shapes”. Antlers, perhaps? Links with Herne? The Hunter? The Horned One?
As I sat on the cairn contemplating the stag’s antler shape Kal pointed out that I was sitting on a special power centre. It was the area to which he had been drawn earlier while I was inside the dolmen structure. It was also, he pointed out, the spot which Oona had been sitting at when she first arrived, he told me. What’s the French for “coincidence”?
The Black Bird of Coincidence
Talking of coincidences, as we re-convene to discuss our findings, my mention of Merlin causes Ooona and Caillu to begin a discussion in French about the name “Le Merle”. It is Merlin, but also the name for a blackbird (Le Merle Noir). They point out that a blackbird has been calling at the site since we arrived, they noticed.
I mention that the day before we travelled I had been sitting in my garden listening to birdsong, and had seen a blackbird land on the garden fence close to me, singing its varied song. At the time I thought it was just one of those pleasurable coincidences. Eyebrows are raised all round. Now I felt that it was something more interesting.
On our way back to Oona’s house Caillu points out a road sign visible from this direction as we leave Plouezoc’h – it’s a sign warning of deer crossing and shows a leaping stag. Beltane was off to an intriguing start!
