Spring 2015-P5 – Oak Staff of Sherwood

For a while I’ve felt that I needed a staff that is more practical than my too-obvious antlered yew staff. The yew staff was right at the time, and is good for ceremonial occasions, but is impractical, too decorative, and was fashioned by someone else. I felt I needed something more subtle that I can carve and work myself. Something that I more “me” and “now”. An oak staff, perhaps?

As we travelled homeward from Dale Hermitage we discussed potential source forests. The New Forest? No trees, mainly gorse bushes and not many oaks. The Forest of Dean? Lovely place, but it had the wrong vibe for me personally. The conversation paused for a moment while we assessed where we were.

We just happened to be around Nottingham heading towards Mansfield. Did we have time to search in Sherwood Forest? Wouldn’t that be a perfect place to get a new oak staff? We set the navigation and within the hour we were parking and preparing for our new outing.

How To Find A Staff

Dowsing is a great method of finding your way on a spiritual path. It can lead you efficiently towards your goal. When dowsing leads you back to the same place but by a different route then you know that you are being taken to a special place. Such was the case as we made our way through Sherwood Forest, visiting the Major Oak first, then moving off the paths following the dowsing rods in meandering trajectory into the woodland.

We passed many fallen branches on our journey. Each time we assessed their suitability, but the rods carried on regardless. They were all clearly “wrong” in some way. Mainly because they weren’t oak, I suspect. After fifteen minutes walk the rods swung together and crossed at a point in the forest where the trees were taller. I stopped to assess the area.

Tarot, Wheel of the Year

As I often do before embarking on a major point in the year’s work I decided to do a tarot draw to ask about my work for Beltane. I already know that my next part of the year will be under the auspices of the tree Blackthorn, according to the Tree Angle Oracle tarot draw which governs each point on the wheel of the year for 2014. This is not what I wanted to know about. Instead, I turned my attention to the current quest – the release of Taliesin‘s awen energy into Carnac. With interesting dowsing results.

Firstly, I did some dowsing to try to get some preliminary answers. My questions go answered through a series of dialogues and logical processes, culminating in this information:-

Why release energy into Carnac? To spread an energy throughout the remaining energy grid that is connected and marked by sacred sites.
What kind of energy will be created from this act? Friendship energy. Whoever connects to the sites that the Carnac energy spreads to, they will feel the bonds of friendship.
Is there any unwise or non-beneficial consequence of releasing this energy? No.

With that safely “in the bag” I turned my attentions to a tarot spread.Three questions regarding my work in Brittany for Beltane.

What are they three key events to be aware of?
What is the nature of the work that I will do while I am in Brittany?
How will I know that I have been successful?

I decided that the first question required three cards, the second two, and the third one. A 3-2-1 spread – a kind of reverse pyramid. I dowsed whether I should take account of reverse cards? YES. Which deck should I use? Rider Waite. Really? I never use that deck. Ah, well. More homework to do!

Five of Wands (reversed)

KEY PHRASES: Restlessness, burn-out, lack of progress, Knight’s quest, single topic.

I foresee that the work itself will be simple and effective, without barriers, yet the amount of work may leave me physically and mentally depleted.

Luck and the Subtle Energy Field

If you only knew how many theoretical posts we had in the background, waiting for a quiet day…. but most of them never see the spotlight of this blog site. It’s not what we’re about, really – telling you how to do stuff. We’re more about showing you the possibilities through our experiences. Yet, occasionally, a theory post slips through the net, because we do have ideas. Lots of them. So, here’s one about the subject of luck.

Many people regard me as being “lucky”. I seem to sail through life unhindered by the many afflictions and wrangles which most people seem to have in their lives. I certainly regard myself as having a “charmed life”, especially when it comes to dangerous situations. Luck is one of those concepts like “coincidence”. It is a component of a magickal life. Without luck one is resigned to a life of struggle, strife and repression. With luck comes freedom, inhibition and risk-taking. We can begin to see why luck is a much-valued and much sought-after commodity.

We need to differentiate luck as a commodity, or a by-product of a lifestyle versus perceived luck as a product of intervention. Some people say that we are being “watched over” – maybe we have a guardian angel? Such an entity offers us the chance of intervention when events might turn away from our “natural”course in life. I understand that concept, and in some situations I think that could be a viable interpretation for how we escape some potential accidents.

There is also the luck that people perceive to be involved in windfalls, or the sudden accumulation of wealth and power. Largely, this is a product of placing oneself in the right place at the right time through hard work; or of becoming involved in the chance, no matter how small, of winning something. For example, I might be lucky, but if I never enter the lottery then I’ll never win the prize! Knowing what I do about this form of luck I can say that if it is in your spiritual development to win such things then you will, and when the time is right. Otherwise, it’s just chance. Sheer chance. ‘Luck’ doesn’t come into it.

I also think there is a more general condition which we would call “luck”. This is the luck which allows one to easily move through life without being affected by restrictions and unwanted human interventions. Often “luck” as a concept is all bundled together as one idea, as though there is only one form of luck. I don’t believe this is so. I think luck comes in different forms, and I know that it is possible to work with at least one form in order to promote a smoother transit through life. Let’s examine this type of luck in more detail.

Saving Annabel

I never quite know how these things come about, but a friend of a friend of a friend of Kal’s mentioned something about their house being haunted, and next thing you know Kal’s inviting me to call them to arrange a visit.

Now I like to be prepared. Hence, there were introductory phone calls, confirmation calls, and a rough background on the likely encounter was established. Then I set about dowsing what I could about the situation. For example: How bad was it? Was it urgent? Was I about to face a wave of mutilation? I mentioned the ‘job’ to my wife, M, and she said simply “Annabel.” OK – I would keep that information in my pocket and see if it was relevant.

Pure Preparations

Over the next few days I consulted with my spirit guide to see whether I could obtain any guidance about what I might need for the work. Having been working without tools all year I was prepared for the answer, and sure enough it came back as expected: no tools were needed for this work. So, I asked if I needed any spiritual assistance. That answer was more helpful – the image of a glowing Archangel Michael kept appearing. Now, I don’t do angel cards, I don’t have angel images around the house, and I don’t go round telling people about angels. However, their interventions and appearances since visiting Iona last Autumn Equinox have been rather exciting and incredibly helpful.

I decided that although I wouldn’t use them I would still take my “sword and shield” crystal and stone. They would act as a reminder in case I needed urgent assistance. I kind of associated Michael with the Sword and Shield symbols anyway. I felt calmed and reassured by the idea that I could call upon a force that I knew to be so energetically powerful. Michael would be my trump card.

I visited a local coffee shop to wait for Kal to join me. Normally I would order a coffee, but for some reason the idea repulsed me! Instead my attention was drawn to the soft drinks area. I picked up a fruit juice, but again the feeling of repulsion kicked in. I put it back down, moving my hand towards something which didn’t have this repulsive feel. Only a bottle of pure water seemed acceptable. I sat in the coffee house with my single bottle of water feeling a little put out. I really did like my coffee, and all I could smell was coffee! I sipped my water and waited. Strange. A sort of purification, I mused.

The Fun Begins

We pulled up at a typical suburban semi-detached house which was already decorated for the up-coming Christmas festivities. It was an inviting house and a modern couple – Jenna and Harry – greeted us, telling su that they had sent the kids away for the evening to be looked after.

We sit and chat with the householders – a lovely couple. Kal decides to play sidekick letting me lead the discussions and intervening to add another perspective. We get the background.

A girl, dressed in a nightgown, long hair, face never seen, both parents have witnessed her separately. The husband has seen her in the upstairs toilet room. The wife felt her get out of her bed and then saw her walking on the landing heading to the toilet room. Both appearances were between 2am and 4am.

The couple insists that despite the time of day they were fully aware and awake at the time of the events they witnessed.
