Five bones and Five Wells

Every once in a while I have an experience which is completely unexpected and yet immensely powerful. Yes, I am on a sacred path, and much of this is marked out for me, but when you’re not expecting something it can be much more powerful. Such was the nature of my vision at Five Wells Barrow near Chelmorton village in Derbyshire.

Kal and I ventured out because it had been a while since we had just gone out for “fun” with no agenda or notion of what might happen. We wanted a site we could get to relatively easily, but which we hadn’t been to in a while. Five Wells fitted that bill. Yes, it’s close to Arbor Low, but frankly that site is rather harsh at this time of year (or any time of year really). There was a biting cold wind so the idea of being snug inside a barrow seemed more inviting that being blasted in Arbor Low’s open space.

Kal and I seemed to have similar ideas. We both began to dowse and were soon standing just feet apart from each other as we moved from a cleansing power centre to one which would allow us to get to the right vibration to energetically connect to the site. It was amusing that we seemed to choose adjacent or even the same power centres.

Soon we were moving off to do our own work. Kal had some questions about his current quests and the journeys they would involve, whereas I had no particular purpose in mind except that I had brought my yew staff and wondered whether I was to work with that in some way. Standing on a suitable power centre I connected in to the site and to its Spirit of Place. Soon I was seeing through glazed eyes.I asked a simple question:

“Why is this site called Five Wells?”

My attention was being moved for me now – my eyes being systematically moved from one point in the distance to another. My head was being turned too, and when the point in the distance was achieved then my vision was momentarily re-focused so that I could see what I was supposed to look at. I have had this kind of “being moved” thing happen before, and so I wasn’t afraid of it. I just let it happen, and as my eyes were focused on one spot I asked “What is there?” Each time the answer was “sacred water”. I counted the number of points I was drawn to. Five!

Breath of the Seasons

The Harvest Moon has arisen. As it now customary, Kal and I try to get out whenever the moon is full in order to make the maximum use of the strong female energies which reflect down onto the Earth at this time of the month. When we discussed a possible site we laughed that Nine Ladies was the front-runner. We recognise that this is the site that we pick when it comes to the end of Summer. There must be something in the way that the energies form at this time of year which attracts us.

Again Kal and I split up and go our separate ways. I find myself drawn to a nearby rowan tree, and I can feel the pull of The Watcher – that otherworldly presence which seems to inhabit the Nine Ladies woodland in a silent invisible vigil.

Sitting in a preparation place I begin asking why I am here. I am reminded that my current quest is to see from the other side of an energy portal. Are there any in this place? Then I remember the Watcher’s Portal, and laugh. How could I forget that tussle? Here’s a link to that episode.

When I ask for an energy portal I am not taken to the Watcher’s Portal, Instead I am led to a bent over birch tree. Experience tells me that to open the portal I may need to search for a kind of energetic combination lock. I ask if there is a sigil protecting the portal and find that there is. I open its four locks by stating my druid name and visualising my intention to use the portal. I wonder what happens now?

Arbor Low – From Heart To Mouth

At the latter end of last year (2013) I mentioned to my dear friend Mike that I had been given a task which, should I choose to accept it, would constitute what is commonly termed a “Great Work“. I know that this is a loaded term, and anyone who has studied the path of The Western Mystery Tradition will recognise that this term is often used by the Masonic groups to describe their overall work for the betterment of humanity. It is certainly a double-edged sword of a term, because of course it depends on who the benefactors of this Great Work might be to determine the integrity and morality. I will not be using it in the traditional context, but rather in terms of what it quite literally is – a large amount of energy work!

The target for this Great Work is the ‘great’ stone circle of Arbor Low. I have often described this site as being like the spokes of a great wheel due to the number of radial energy leys which emanate from it and which then travel across the length and breadth of these islands. My name for it is The Wheel of Albion and one day I will fully document all the sites along these leys which I believe are linked to its energy profile. I have already made a start with this, and in fact it is the most often viewed post on this site!

Today, my motivation was to begin to do some energy cleaning along some of the damaged and disrupted leys. Before I tell that tale, I have some fresh information on The Wheel of Albion and its terminus points.

Hedge Druidry

I have been using my pen name of Gwas Myrddyn since I started this blog in the middle of 2008. It has adopted a personality all of its own now, and it feels like a well-worn leather glove which slips comfortably over me, shielding me with its anonymity. However, last year I was guided to move further out from its penumbra and allow more of the light to fall upon me – I had to become more involved as myself, to begin to dissolve some of the artificial barriers that I had put up between my self and my adopted personality. I did so reluctantly, but in small ways I have begun to emerge from the shadow of this name.

What I wasn’t expecting was that on a seemingly innocuous visit to a sacred site that I would discover just how meaningless my druid name had become now! Let me explain how I lost one name and found another.

The evening featured unpleasant weather. It was still too cool to be refreshing rain, and too windy to ignore it. All the way through Buxton and Bakewell Kal and I chatted enthusiastically whilst trying to ignore the elements around us. Kal assured me that everything would be okay, and that he wouldn’t need any weather-defying clothing. The rain got worse, but then as we came up the Harthill Moor road to a pot-holed lay-by the rain faded out like a ghost at dawn. Kal smirked as I changed into my waterproof leggings.

As we approached the outcrop known as Robin Hood’s Stride I took the footpath right. This leads past a very interesting set of rock formations – a couple of shallow caves hidden within the trees atop a steep slope. We ventured into the woodland and wondered what we were doing here. We should have been heading for the stone circle nearby, but something “pulled” me towards this place. I was about to get my dowsing rods out to find the location when I spotted something…

Kal called it the face of a grumpy goblin, but I saw something more familiar –a hawk entity. It was the Spirit of Place for this area, and I decided to find out why it had called me here as I was passing. I touched the stone and settled into a quick routine of connection. Soon we were locked in empathic communion, and our thoughts were rendered into a conversation.

I introduced myself. When I said my druid name ‘Gwas Myrddyn’, the Hawk spirit refuted it! I was a bit astonished – I hadn’t been expecting that. I asked the spirit whether he could tell me what my new name was, but he couldn’t do that. It wasn’t his place to reveal that information, was the response I felt and interpreted into words. The Hawk told me that I would find my new name at Nine Stones Close – the stone circle nearby.

Froggatt Edge – Circle of Horny Power

On a hot summer evening after work we drove through the back end of Derbyshire to head for a stone circle that we only rarely visit. The circle (also known as Stoke Flat) stands upon the imposing cliffs of Froggatt Edge. The walk up is delightful through the birch and oak trees, with the sunlight shading your ascent. Even so, we arrived at the bottom of the section used by climbers and our clothes were sodden – the heat was still very strong even getting close to six in the evening.

We stopped for a moment to admire our efforts and the accompanying views. All around us were the scoured and shaped forms of sandstone weathered by the ages, and producing the most incredible features. Almost everyobody we met stopped off to have their picture taken with one of them as a backdrop.

At this time of year finding the Froggatt Edge stone circle isn’t easy. It’s well hidden in the tall ferns, so we were lucky that I remembered the location from a previous visit. I hurried ahead to locate the path and take some pictures before the sun dipped down too far for a good photo. Only the tip fo the tallest stone was visible from the path.
