After my Rollright Stones experience, where the site had been unlocked in a specific sequence, I was keen to see whether the rest of the day would live up to that experience. But which sites were in the area that I could reach in my small old car within a day? I checked my maps and saw that I had put a “stone icon” pin in two features nearby that I had never visited before. Two new sites, and only a few miles away! I got very excited at the prospect.

The Hawk Stone
The first site was called The Hawk Stone. Is this the site from which the recently popularised Hawkstone brewery gets its name? With a name which included my totem bird, the hawk, I was bound to visit.
As I turned the car into the narrower lane amongst a tapestry of typical Oxfordshire fields, I was ushered by a raven at the roadside. He watched me knowingly, unflustered by the mechanical chariot which swung around him. I noticed him. That was all. A tingle of excitement rose in me. A discreet but welcome sign.
I parked in the impromptu layby next to an open field, thankful that the mud ruts were dry, and I gathered my things before sticking my head into the field. Any stone there? No. I tried the next field entry only feet away. Aha. A standing stone stood alone by a wide verge.

I set about dowsing as I approached the stone. Was there anything spiritual for me to do here today? NO. Oh. Then this would be a dowsing fact-finding mission. A chance to measure the energies at the Autumn Equinox.

I began by asking where the boundary was, but instead of doing this from outside the stone, as the approach to it was not energetically significant on this visit – i.e. I didn’t need to find an entrance, or ask permission to work – I started from the stone itself and worked out. The stone’s energy boundary was about 50 feet away! Wow. That’s quite some aura field.
Next obvious question – how strong is the energy today on a scale of 1 to 10. The Hawk Stone registers as a 10/10 energy rating! Another wow. That’s rare.
Male and female lines
Often at standing stones there is a male energy emerging from a sharp(er) edge of the stone, and a female energy coming out of a flat(ter) side. So, time to check this stone for those currents.
There was a wide female energy path going out of the rounded, flatter edge and heading off into the field of crops, getting wider all the time as it left the stone. Interesting. A kind of cone effect. The line dowsed for a fertility aspect.
There was indeed a corresponding male energy line on coming out of the only sharp edge of the stone, positioned in direct opposition to the female line. The male line was narrower, but also had a 10/10 strength. So, the male and female energies were going in opposite directions. Perfect balance on the equinox.

As we were at a perfect point in the calendar, I decided to check for the strength of the energies in the stone at the complete opposite (opposing and balancing) time of the year, the solstices. The dowsing rods informed me that the energies would be a 5/10 strength at either of the Solstices. So, all year round this would be a fairly strong energy field, rising to a peak at the equinoxes. Handy that I visited today then.
Next on my little list was another new site. The Hoar Stone. I knew nothing about it, so I didn’t research before I got there either. Let’s take this site on completely fresh!
The Hoar Stone
Finding this site was easy. As I approach the village of Enstone, literally moment inside its boundaries, there was a small crossroads and the site was nestled amongst some trees behind a dry-stone wall. Again, there was a little lay-by opposite it, untarmacked but big enough for a couple of cars to park.
I dowsed outside the car. in case I needed to approach it in a particular way. Was there any spiritual work to be done here today? NO, again. OK. Another fact-finding mission.

The first thing was the extent of the energy around the site. How large was it? The site boundary was only 10 feet wide. I assumed this was probably in part due to the walling in of the site, and the roads which lines it. Maybe they were a factor, but I didn’t check this, only thought it.
I looked at the site. This wasn’t just one stone, but a cluster. It was a burial chamber.
The energy level was 7/10. Nice. Useful, if you needed to work. I checked for male and female lines. One of each, and just like the Hawk Stone they were both in balance and opposition. In terms of strength they were also registering as a 7. So, again, everything was in balance here. Equinoxes are so easy!

As there was nothing for me to do I took a punt. Did the site have a Spirit of Place? The rods said it did. Well then, could I connect with it? Yes indeed. I was taken away from the chamber to a nearby sunken stone within the site, and I stood there to connect. Protection went up, as usual. Then a process of connection began. Despite the passing traffic this was relatively easy to do today, and soon I was in communication with something. The spirit announced itself as “Grack“,named after a crow’s sound. OK. Fun! Did it need anything from me? NO. Right. Then I offered my good wishes and thanked the spirit for the opportunity.
A crow, eh? There had been a raven near the Hawk Stone. Corvids were all over the place today. 🙂
One last thing. As I inspected the stones I could see several conkers had been left inside one of the larger hollows in the limestone. I took the opportunity to add my smoky quartz crystal in the stone’s hollow to add a little charge before I left. It charged to a 7 strength, obviously. In gratitude I also left a conker as a gift, s others had done. I just happened to have one! I wondered why I brought one with me today! Coincidence.

As I was leaving a hawk circled overhead. My sign. I was another right path again. Well, there was still time in the day. Where could I go next, I wondered? I looked at my map again. Well, it wasn’t THAT much of a drive to get to The Devil’s Quoits near Stanton Harcourt. So mote it be. I trundled off with glee.
