In the second of my Spring Equinox 2015 posts I recount a short tale about memory and stone.

We had travelled northwards after scooting around the area of Rutland – an unusual area that very few people would be able to point to on a map of the country. Our searches for some sacred springs and well needed more time than we were prepared to give it. Therefore we settled on finding the Grimston Monolith at the small village of Grimston.

You know what? Turns out we got the wrong stone! I thought it stood inside the churchyard, so when we found a stone in there we latched on to that. No wonder it didn’t have any energy! What it DID have was a story, however.

I was surprised to find that the stone had no subtle energies. I believed it to have been excavated and the re-sited. Now I know it wasn’t even the right stone. Nevertheless, the rods indicated that there was something I could work with. Knowing that they wouldn’t tell me more I tried my hand at psychometry – the art of obtaining information from ‘inanimate’ objects.

I felt “death energy”. Why, I wondered? I asked for a direction, and in response my mind was filled with a wandering path that went off to the back end of the church. I could see the energy trail stop at a specific gravestone, even though it was currently out of sight of the stone where I was standing.

The White, The Red and The Rose

The sky was blue, the sun was out, and the weather was warm. Was it Spring? Well, it was the beginning of March, but you could be mistaken for thinking it was at least a month later in the year. Like fledglings stretching their furry wings we roused ourselves to make for our favourite perch – Dinas Bran. As always Bran delivered.

The evocative ruins lured us upwards until we stopped to consider our rightful path. Dowsing rods came out and rather unexpectedly we were both led by the same energetic path to reach the same entry point – and it was the normal entrance that 80% of tourists to the site must use to go in. For us that was unusual. I think it’s probably the first time we’ve been in that way, and the first time that we’ve both had the same way in on the same day.

Others had the same draw as us for the hilltop was thronging with people. Children were sword-fighting, and that reminded me of my Sword and Shield motif, which I then promptly forgot again. There was no time for play – this was a great chance to do some work. I dowsed for the ideal location for me to get information that would progress my spiritual path. Those of you who follow regularly will recognise this request. A good starting point for adventure! I was taken away from the hordes, and round the back to a shady area I have been to many times before. Ah, it was like coming home.

In the second tale of my Nottingham adventures I had travelled the short distance from Clumber Park to Creswell Crags. A friend had once recommended Creswell Crags to me several years ago, and had mentioned that it contained some of the earliest cave pictures in the country. This was something that I thought I should go and see – not because I’m interested in ancient people per se, but because I often wonder if they have left us clues of their connection with the subtle energies around them. So it was with this in mind that I went into the quiet visitor’s centre and asked if I could do the big tour.

The cave tours aren’t available in the week, so I could only do the exhibition. A major disappointment! Not only was I hoping to do some dowsing in the caves to see what I could find there, but I was also hoping to do a little meditation in order to re-shape my aura now that I had been balanced by the beech tree at Clumber Park. Seems like I would be resigned to peering in through the iron grilles that were across each cave entrance.

I paid for the exhibition in any case and it turned out to be very interesting. There was an interactive screen which challenged you to find and trace the various rock art shapes that are etched into the roofs of the Church Hole cave. This was great fun and quite a test for the eye. I didn’t always agree with the suggestions for what the figures represented, but then this is always going to be a discussion point as we can’t really know the ancient cultures and their environments except for the archaeological evidence, which is only a fraction of the full picture.

In addition to the descriptions of the rock art there was some information on the previous inhabitants of the cave area. Some sharp teeth on display from the hyenas. Yes, hyenas on the Derbyshire/Nottinghamshire border! Mind you, if you’ve spent a night out in Nottingham…. 😉

Walking out into the fresh air, through the contrived park paths, I was directed by the dowsing rods to walk around in anti-clockwise direction. I could feel the pull of Church Hole opposite. but I did my best to ignore it. I knew I would have to go towards that point eventually, but first I wanted to examine the other caves. I peered through the iron grilles of each cave. Only Robin Hood’s Cave felt interesting. I would have to come back on a weekend some time when it was warmer.

I visited the final cave on the right-hand side but then my attention was pulled strongly up onto the top of the crags opposite. It wasn’t the Church Hole Cave pulling me, then, it was somewhere on top of the crag! I decided to investigate….
