Autumn Equinox at Balmoral

Hedge Druidry, Modern Druidry, Quests, Wheel of the Year

Folks, you have been very patient with me while I am going through some transitions in my life. We used to post as regularly as clockwork. Now we’re posting as a when we can in between the whirlwind that our paths have become. The October Storms have come early for both Kal and I, despite the good weather all around us! Your patience is appreciated – stick with us. We have lots of great tales to tell you as the season changes.

I will start with the story of my transition through the Autumn Equinox. I hope it was eventful, but mostly fruitful for you. For me it was one door closing and another opening. A portal, truly! The Equinox fell during my week long holiday in Scotland. M and I had driven up from Cheshire into the heartland and highlands of The Cairngorms in our motorhome, and had decided to do some “wild camping”, parking at the side of the Old Military Road near to Balmoral Castle – advertising itself as the summer home of The Queen.

I felt edgy – I knew it was the Equinox the next morning, and I wanted to do something, but was I in the right place? Was this beautiful location a sacred space? I decided to get up early on the Equinox day to find out.

The Cauldron of Cailleach – Summer 14 P10

Ardgroom stone circle, Kerry, Ireland

Somehow, in our travels up and down the coast road of the Breara Peninsula, we had missed the sign. The sign was small and so was the lane along which we had to travel. The day was coming close to an end, and the sun was beginning to drag the shadows into longer shapes. Heading now towards Ardgroom circle we found that the land ended in a car park suitable for three or four cars. There was one parked there already, and we slotted in next to it. The signs to the circle pointed towards some marsh reeds, showing us that at any other time of the year we would be walking through a marshland, but luckily at the height of summer the ground was rutted but hard.

A stone circle in the lee of the Black Dragon Hills.

As we approached the circle we could see that it was dominated by a group of people, most of whom were standing with their backs to a tall stone. One woman was sitting at the edge of the circle in the middle of the company. She seemed to be directing a ritual, so Kal and I moved off to one side of the site so as not to disturb them while they worked.

Kal wandered down to the circle, dowsing as he went, prowling around the outer edges. I kept my distance, taking photographs of the circle from various angles to pass the time while we waited to see if the group would finish their work any time soon. They looked bedded in for the day, and so I dowsed for a suitable place to work outside the circle instead. I was taken to a small hillock where there were several fairy rings in the grass. This seemed a good vantage point to do my own work from while I wanted to see what would happen inside the circle. I did a connection and soon I was feeling the flow of energy from the hills behind me, and the sweeping power of a ‘dark’ lady whom I was becoming familiar with on this trip.

Solstice 2013 – Diving Between Worlds at The Hurlers

Posted on July 3, 2013July 3, 2013 By Gwas No Comments on Solstice 2013 – Diving Between Worlds at The Hurlers
Ancient Sites, Crossing The Hedge, Wheel of the Year

On our last visit to Bodmin Moor years ago we had encountered all sort of strangeness in the mists surrounding The Hurlers stone circles near the village of Minions. We were therefore quite expectant of more interesting times, but hopefully with a clearer view of the landscape this time, and a slightly higher temperature might be more inviting too. So, we were a touch crest-fallen when we arrived and visibility was down to a hundred feet or so. Would we see The Hurlers in clear daylight at all? We got kitted out for a damp situation.

What's that shape?
What’s that shape?

Eerie. Bleak. Confusing. Damp. Bodmin Moor the day before the Summer Solstice. It could have been the depths of Winter except that there were occasional signs of greenery which might not have been there in the Winter months. Dark shapes loomed at us as we made our way down the main track then veered off towards the faint impression of a standing stone. The second we left the track we were nervous. This is the kind of place where people disappear for days, yet we knew that the village and the car park at the end of it were only a few hundred feet away. Yet they were invisible.

The Quiet Time

Posted on January 25, 2013January 25, 2013 By Gwas 2 Comments on The Quiet Time
Theory, Wheel of the Year

I have been using the term “The Quiet Time” in recent posts and thought it was time that I explained this phrase better, and what the concepts are that I associate with this phrase. The Quiet Time is a period in the cycle of the Wheel of the Year, the turning of one season to … Read More “The Quiet Time” »

2010 – Fabulous

Edge Wizardry, Wheel of the Year

Gregorian-ly speaking the year endeth, although I felt that the new cycle began after Samhain. However recent experiences now make me feel that perhaps the Winter Solstice marked the turning point. Perhaps I should dowse to determine the answer? I can only say! What a year! I was going to go choose a highlight or … Read More “2010 – Fabulous” »
