Cymatics: The Chladni Song

We talk frequently on this blog about things such as frequency, vibration, energy and geometry. Chladni patterns, or Cymatics as they have become termed, are expressions of the geometry inherent in frequency.

Chladni patterns – named after the acoustician and meteorologist Ernst Chladni – can be made visible by the vibration of sound through a flat plate upon which are placed powder or crystalline substances which will then form increasingly complex geometric patterns in harmony with the increase of sonic vibrations. Liquids also display the same forms but in three dimensions.

Chladni patterns

It’s quite spectacular and marvellous to see it. It also reminds me of many of the patterns seen carved into stone at megalithic sites the world over and of labyrinth designs too. See what you think. Here are some of the YouTube videos about this phenomenon:

This inventive lady creates a song from some pure tones that demonstrate Chaldni formations.

Increasing frequency in various media

Stick with this even if your ears won’t forgive you the experience. See how the patterns become more complex with increasing frequency.

Cymatics: Bringing Matter to Life

A rather dry three-part film about how cymatics makes invisible frequencies visible. Yay for Cymatics!

Thomas Bloch plays the Cristal Baschet

In a similar but different vein, Thomas Bloch gives us a demonstration of his playing of the cristal blaschet, and instrument based upon the vibration of glass cylinders.

And that’s quite enough about sound, frequency, vibrations and geometric form. I’m all vibrated out! Back to druidry and dowsing…..
