In the final part of my Autumn Equinox posts from the island of Anglesey I talk about my visit to the wonderful and mysterious mound of Bryn Celli Ddu with my psychic friend Mike. As you might expect given the company I was in this was a different experience than my usual dowsing visits, and I was also able to find out what the next final part of my healing quest would entail for the next few weeks.
Bryn Celli Ddu
We walked the gravelly path to the ancient mound buoyed by expectation. Our visit to Barclodiad Y Gawres had been disappointing, but now the sun was trying to break through the cloud cover, and the wind was easing back from its incessant howl. Of course, as always happens, we passed some visitors heading away from the site as we approached. This is such a busy place!
As we walked down the path I again “noticed” the moss-covered stone at the corner of the final approach path. As we walked round the corner I saw my old friend the ash tree – one of the tree guardians of the site. I paid my respects and passed the time of day without expecting a response. Mike, however, got rejected when he tried a similar approach. I giggled a little at this – this is exactly how Kal started out when he first approached trees – with an expectation of instant friendship. I knew that the road was much longer and tougher to travel than many people expect when it comes to talking to trees.
We began our approach and I mentioned how “spooky” the hawthorn-lined path could be at night. Even in the day it is a little intimidating. Mike said that he felt we were being watched. I stopped and tried to sense the presence too. Oh yes! Now that I turned my 360-degree attention to the entity I could sense there was something watching our progress, and it wasn’ t the tree. Hmm…I made a mental note.

Now we rounded the final corner and opened to gate to the site. it was Mike’s first visit and he drew an appropriately large intake of air in a huge gasp of appreciation.
I welcomed Mike to the site, and straight away Mike reciprocated by saying that the site felt very welcoming too. We were smiling throughout the visit. We began to crawl all over the mound – standing on top, looking all around it, feeling for the energy flows. Mike asked me if there were lots of earth energy centres here. I knew there were, so I told him all about the ring of alternating male and female spirals that ring the mound. He wasn’t surprised – he could feel them.
Mike went to stand on top of the mound whilst I took some photographs. I noticed that he stood on a very particular spot, but I didn’t say anything until he came back down. Then I told him that he had been standing on the main power centre on the top of the mound – the very place that I always dowse as being the strongest energy point in the site. Mike said that he saw a pillar of light arising from that spot, and I said that this was not s surprise to me. It is the strongest for a reason, because it is the point that is directly above the petrified tree pillar inside the chamber. I didn’t mention that, either, but instead directed Mike to come inside the entrance where he might discover why he had been drawn to that spot, and why he was seeing a pillar of light.
As we entered the inner chamber Mike said a polite, “Oh!” as he saw the pillar inside. “Well, that explains that!” he said. He stood staring at the pillar for a few moments and I knew that he was ‘seeing’ it with another level of perception.

Moments later he was placing his hands upon the pillar, feeling the strength of the energies emerging from it. He couldn’t be drawn away from it! For several long minutes he stood there “hugging” it and touching it, laying his hands upon it and trying it from different angles. He clearly liked it.
I felt that I needed to do something in here. I had determined earlier in the day that the chamber of Bryn Celli Ddu would be where I would come to learn about the next part of my Autumn Equinox task, and so I set about feeling for what I should do next. I should place my elemental crystal set on a small shelf of rock where what little sunlight there was entered the chamber. So, I did just that. There were six crystals – stones representing the four elements, and one to represent the “fifth element” – my spirit guide. The sixth crystal was a smoothed quartz stone that was somewhat superfluous to the set.
I laid the crystals on the shelf and went to touch the petrified pillar. As I touched it the smooth quartz crystal fell off the rock shelf and thudded to the floor! A sign. I removed the crystal and put it back in my day sack, out of the way. I touched the pillar in the chamber again and closed my eyes once more. At that second the inside of my eyelids went bright orange so I opened my eyes. The sun had come out of an impossible gap between thick grey clouds and was shining right onto the crystals on the shelf! Mike gasped, also recognising the significance of the moment. Minutes later I collected the crystals from the shelf and Mike remarked that the other pillar quartz in the set should also be kept separate from the four elemental crystals. “It is highly charged now” he stated. I had to agree. It was strangely warm to the touch and I could feel my pulse in my hand as it lay in my palm. I put it in a special pocket in my bag.
The Energy Source
I don’t want to say too much about what happened next, except that Mike felt drawn to a particular spot inside the chamber. We examined it with senses and with dowsing rods and found that it was an energy “leak”. There was an energy source behind this spot. We did some investigation and determined that there was something hidden behind the wall of the chamber that was acting as an energy source for the mound itself. It was also energetically linked to the pillar, and may have been the source of the “pillar of light” that we had seen and felt.
There was a lot more to it, but I’m not saying any more for reasons that I want to keep to myself. I only mention it because I think it’s important to mention that the site had a hidden energy source that is man-made, in addition to any natural subtle energy sources that may be found there.

Ghost Bird
One of the benefits of being with a psychic, and of developing such talents myself, is that you get a totally different perspective on sacred sites when you begin to tune into them with an increased level of awareness. Such was the case when Mike ‘noticed something’ watching us in the passageway. Quickly I was able to switch perception to scan with a 360 degree sense and soon I felt the presence too.
Mike felt it was not a human presence, nor any form of demonic entity. With that established I raised my dowsing rods and began a process of elimination. “Animal, vegetable, mineral” I began. Animal was the response. “Spirit, ghost or shade” I continued. Shade, came the response. Once I had an anchor on which to begin to perceive the entity I was beginning to tune in. It was the shade of a bird that had been killed inside the passage, and it still thought of the mound as its home. It was not necessary for us to perform any kind of release – the bird was not anguished or in trouble. It simply continued to exist somehow as a shadow of its former self. I don’t know how.
Momentarily I wondered if it was a hawk. Suddenly my mind was turned to my Autumn Equinox quest. If it was the hawk spirit that I have come to know that did that, then I have cause to thank it because I had nearly forgotten why I was here!
The Wheel of the Year
I turned my attention back tot he pillar and the chamber. Standing on a compatible power centre I took the “charged” pillar of quartz from my elemental set and held it at various chakra points on my energy body, seeking a connection between my energy body and the pillar. I invoked the Spirit of Place and asked for permission to see the next part in my quest. I went into a meditative trance and waited to see what would happen.
My next task was shown to me. It was a vision of myself using my hands to shape a current of subtle energy into shapes and forms like a sculptor or a potter would with clay (see Demi-Urgic Field). I knew how significant this image was. It meant to me that I would need to learn how to mould energy in the next five weeks until Samhain if I wanted to successfully conclude my healing energy tasks for this year. I didn’t yet know how they might be employed, though.
The Watchers
We left he site satisfied and invigorated by our unusual findings. It was one of the most interesting visits I had had to the mound, full of wonderful synchronicities, signs and spirits. What more could one ask for on a spiritual quest? As we rounded the hawthorn hedge corner to head back down the slope we again felt the presence of something watching. There was definitely a Watcher, a Guardian of some sort who watched those who came and went at this part of the path. See if you can feel it yourself next time you’re there!
As we passed the big ash tree I thanked the tree spirit for watching over us and for allowing us a beneficial experience at the site. I sent the tree some love, respect and gratitude through its thick gnarly bark. Mike approached the tree as well, but as before it pushed him away and he recoiled with a look of resignation on his face. He shrugged his shoulders, “Oh well. It just doesn’t like me!” he said matter-of-factly. One day I will teach him the things i have learned about approaching trees and it may change his world.
Gwas.
