I really enjoy being surprised, in a delightful way. When Kal suggested a trip to Nine Stones Close circle just the far side of Bakewell in Derbyshire I was delightfully surprised. It felt like ages since we had been there, so I jumped at the chance given that it was probably going to be a sunny warm day. What a glorious summer we’re having here in Britain this year! I certainly couldn’t remember when I last saw this circle in sunshine!
We arrived and I prepared myself for rain. Derbyshire has something of a reputation akin to Cumbria when it comes to sudden and dramatic downpours of water, and there were certainly clouds looming. However, as soon as Kal got to work on changing the weather the sky began to clear. By the time we had walked up to the memorial bench just below Robin Hood’s Stride – a mound of sculpted red sandstone – then the sky was gleaming blue with occasional white patches of fluffy cloud. All weather-proof gear was stowed, and we began to follow our instincts without the threat of getting rained off.
The Concave Cave
Kal was dowsing a waving line up the hill, stopping occasionally at spirals on the way up. I was walking the same path but higher up, and I looked back to notice we were making the same path over the dry slope. For some reason I didn’t head through the normal gate up past Robin Hood’s Stride but instead went off to the darker fir-fringed ridge path. Kal followed and confirmed that this was the way he wanted to go too. We didn’t know why. I followed the energy force that was pulling me. It’s a real treat to do this – the energies were strong enough to actually follow without dowsing rods this evening.
On top of the steep ridge I found a concave depression in the sandstone – almost a cave but too shallow. More like a shelter. Inside I dowsed for the place to sit but I already knew where it was – it was the focal point for the parabolic shape – a spot near to the mouth of the cave.

The Tuning of the Chakras
At the focal point of the cave I sat and did some vocal chakra tuning – a technique I had learned a while back and which made full use of the resonance afforded by the concave shield of rock behind me. I felt myself shift into a new phase and back out with each humming sound.
As we began to leave Kal pointed out a face in the rocks around us. Once you see one you begin to see more. Suddenly we were surrounded by an army of rock warriors! Luckily, they weren’t very fast-moving. We legged it to head off to Nine Stones Close!
Did you see that dragon?
It was easy to get to the circle this evening. The ground was dry and the way seemed clear – no crops, no tall grasses, no getting wet. The stones seemed impressive tonight – curiously shaped, pregnant with subtle energies, waiting to divulge secrets. The dry air prickled with mystic opportunity.
As I prepared to do some work I spotted a rain cloud sylph. What often happens is that I am so smitten with the watching of them, that by the time I come to take a picture of them they have de-formed from the shape that so initially fascinated me. So, as you look at the picture below and wonder what all the fuss was about, let me tell you that initially there was a very distinct shape of a figure floating along as though swimming through the sky. There were no other clouds in the area that looked anything like this one – not even close. It was quite distinct, and I recognised it instantly for what it was – a rain cloud sylph.

I turned my attention to doing some dowsing. I dowsed to find the place where I should be positioned to do some work and found that I was brough around each stone and then back along a straight path. Yes, that’s right – a straight path! Straight energy paths are SO unusual that it was noteworthy. Why was it straight? Subtle energies are rarely straight unless they are… a ley line… hmmm…
Seconds later I had confirmed it was a ley line – three male energies flowing one direction and three female energies flowing in the opposite direction. We had discovered this ley before, we remembered once we started to talk about it. As I thought about dragon energies and ley lines I glanced at the cloud sylph again. A dragon face appeared at the forefront of the cloud as I was watching it, and stayed there long enough for me alone to notice. As I went to mention it to Kal it began to change and dissipate again. Damn, these signs are ethereal!
The Sign of Three
“Three”, as they say, “is a magic number.” Kal and I got into a discussion abotu the nature of signs in Nature. Then, as we broke off to continue our respective work three butterflies hovered over kal’s head, so close and delicate that he didn’t even notice. I did. More signs. This was going to be an interesting and productive evening.
He kept being taken to the same spot. I dowsed for where I should start my work and was taken on a straight line back to Kal. There was nothgin for it. We would have to sit at almost the same place tonight. Thatw as the best spot. I sat in the ley and charged up with ‘dragon’ energies. Hey – if you’re going to give me the signs, I’m going to work with them!
Then I was taken around the circle, in and out of each stone, then to a point that was perfectly balanced between the stones and the oak tree’s aura. At that point I connected to Nature, asking for guidance on the forthcoming banquet. I began my discourse with the Fey of this circle:-
-
Of what should this banquet consist? – You are meeting with a faery of the light, therefore flowers would be the best things to bring
-
Which ones? – Any ones you think are the flowers of this summer – they will be the ones to pick (sacrifice)
-
How many?- An abundance. You must bring a banquet of flowers, fresh picked on the morning of the meeting
-
Anything else I need to know? – Consider the position of the stars. They are important to the meeting.
With every discussion, more questions. Which stars were important? Should I already know? Actually, it would take me until the evening before the meeting to work that one out and when I discover it I could almost slap myself it is so obvious. Stupidity has its own rewards. Anyway – that’s another story.
Gwas.
