The Tainted Talisman

Holidays are a wonderful thing. Here I was, roaming along the southern coastline of Albion, the sun was shining and I had no agenda – no physical, mental or spiritual work to achieve this week. Yet something was nagging at me. When re-stocking our motorhome I had re-discovered a treasured item – a necklace that I associated strongly with the Merlin energy. When I picked up the necklace it felt… “neglected”,, but more than that. “Tainted” may be a better word. Not strongly, but enough to cause me to wish to set that right.

It was in the back of my mind one evening as I let thoughts bubble to the surface, and I tried to get a glimpse of what I should do about it. In my vision I saw an old gnarled tree – maybe an oak? I saw the word “Rye” and didn’t know if that was a place or a crop. I knew I could easily resolve the problem by introducing some peaceful and sympathetic energies into the talisman, I felt.

I looked on the map. Rye was a town easily reachable in an hour from where we were staying in Bexhill-On-Sea. So, a visit would be in order.

We walked all around the mediaeval town of Rye, had lunch, then were about to leave when I felt a pull up a steep hill. I convinced M that we needed to continue looking around the town. There was something I needed to do, and the top of the hill would be the location, I felt. As we emerged into an old square lined with timber-framed buildings and a huge church I knew already this was the place.

As I walked into the grounds of Rye Parish Church, which is dedicated to The Virgin Mary, a small flock of white doves swooped from their lofty perch at the top of the tallest church window and flew right in front of me at eye level. I involuntarily ducked, even though I knew there was no harm in what they did, but it was just such a shock that they were so close. If time had been frozen I would have been starting them in the eyes at one point!

I recognised quickly that the tree I had seen in my vision was not an old gnarly oak tree, but instead an imposing and yet distinctly gnarly beech tree. I felt an instant connection and knew that this would be where I would do my work. I got prepared, even though I had no idea what I would need. From my small day bag I pulled out a smoky quartz crystal. That would be what I should use.

Using my dowsing rods I found the correct locations in hollows of the tree where the two items could sit – the crystal in one, and the necklace in the other. I was shown that I needed to sit between the two, connected to the tree’s roots.

The white doves stayed gently cooing during my meditation, lulling me into trance. Soon I had an image of Merlin forming before me. He was holding a carved oak staff and in his other hand he held a hand-sized crystal ball.

What was the significance of this vision? What about the crystal ball – an omen of divination? I already had the oak staff which I was currently allowing to season by air-drying it over the summer. Was I about to discover a crystal ball too? Were these tools symbolic of magickal processes, or meant to be used as real implements?

As I was thinking these thoughts one of the white doves descended from the lofty perch of the tall gothic-styled window arch and landed on a nearby gravestone. White doves are the classic symbol of peace, but they also have their associations with magic shows. Maybe the sign was that more magick was about to come into my life?

I was merely happy that my connection to Merlin had been re-established, and the signs were auspicious and flowing once more. Housekeeping is important in this line of work.
