I have nightmares so rarely that I could probably count them on one hand. Last night was one such occasion. I awoke about 4am with a start. I had been in a house that I recognised from memory. The film that the house (in my dream) was from was called The Amityville Horror. Have you seen it? It is the story of a house (or a spirit living in the house) that terrorized the occupiers. A bit scary back in the day, not so much now. Anyway I hadn’t seen the film for years so why was it occupying my dreams or indeed my nightmare?
Let’s skip back a few hours to the evening before.
I was visiting with an old friend of mine, Rob. He’s moved to the other side of the country but was visiting his folks and had dropped me a line. I would never say No to Rob, the guy is a rare intellectual who loves to (or rather loved to) explore the paranormal. Years ago we rolled together for a few years. Anyway I met up with Rob and he told me that an old friend of his had called him up about a poltergeist haunting that was begging to be investigated. Now, I don’t do that kind of thing anymore but a few months ago I came up with some interesting theories of my own on that subject matter so I was amenable to go a ghost hunting with my ol’ pal.
Going back a few hours, we arrived in a quiet neighbourhood just as it was going dark…spooky…Me, Rob and Sylvia. I had never met Sylvia but kind-of liked her straight away she has a good aura (I think/feel). The house was a large one with 6 bedrooms and 8 rooms downstairs (inc two conservatories). The family that lived there consisted of three generations, Grandma, Mr and Mrs, and 4 children aged 22, 18, 14 and 12. As I was introduced to the family, I paid particular attention to the younger children, knowing the theories about poltergeist and pubescent children. Rob knew this too and he gave me a knowing nod as we were led into one of the living rooms.
I have had some experience with this type of ghost. Poltergeist is a well established type of ghost. For those not of a German tongue, the word means noisy ghost. Which is quite an apt name as that is what such a beastie is known for. Banging around a house, moving things, making things disappear and appear (apports). They have even been known to throw people around. A good distinction to make about such ghosts is that they have never, or very rarely known to harm people (even the ones that have thrown people around). Another important piece of research about such phenomena is that they are thought not to be the spirit of a dead person. It is more likely that they are a ball of energy that is being pushed around by the sub-conscious of a pubescent child. An excellent book on the matter is Poltergeist by Colin Wilson (it’s a bit old. 70’s I think, but is still the definitive work on the matter).
We were here to investigate whether this house was haunted and if it was haunted, by what. The suspect was a poltergeist because of the phenomena that had been observed. Examples of incidents were furniture moving, A really bad smell, glasses breaking in the kitchen, homework vanishing. As is normal with such cases many of the incidents were only observed after the fact or through the corner of one’s eye. I have a perfect example of this kind of thing from my own personal experience…
It was about 18/20 years ago when I was deep in the throws of paranormal investigations and had the fortune to investigate a really active poltergeist haunting. The house was a normal terraced house and in fact had been in the local paper as being haunted to the point of driving the occupier out of the home. That was how I had initially heard of it and was excited to investigate it….come on! Driving the householders out of their home! Definitely going there!
Anyway whilst walking around the home on my initial visit I was walking past the kitchen when I saw (felt?) some movement through the corner of my eye in the kitchen. I looked in sharply and was startled to see a column of knives and forks standing end to end on a table, making a tower of them that came clattering down as soon as I had observed them. Almost (I thought at the time) as if they had been set up by the poltergeist just for my benefit.
Rob and Sylvia quizzed the family about what kinds of experiences they had had and what times, who had been home etc, whilst I (being the only dowser in our group) wandered the rooms and hallways in search of the beastie. It is a testament to how far I have come over the years, because back in the day I would never have wandered the halls on my lonesome. Armed with a really awesome energy shield and an intuitive sense that seems to be going from strength to strength I had no worries.
- Was there (what I would call a) poltergeist in this house? Yes.
- Was it a Shade? No.
- I can’t ask if it’s the spirit of a dead person, that doesn’t compute with my Faith and I wouldn’t know what to do with such an answer anyway.
- Was this Poltergeist an aware energy? Yes.
- Was it an entity in its own right? Yes
- Was it a ball of energy that was being pushed around by the subconscious of another? Yes
- But it was an aware energy also? Yes
- Was it dangerous to the family living here? No
- Did it mind being pushed around? No. I got the sense that it thought this was play.
- Had this being anything to do with Conception energies? Yes.
- Was there any Conception energies in this house? Yes
I suppose I had better mention a theory that I have been mulling over for a year or so. Since finding Conception energies and also learning that they are connected to a child that has been conceived in the house and that they dissipate at the childs puberty I wondered whether they had anything to do with poltergeist since these beasties seem to vanish/fade at that time too. Here was an excellent time to learn more about both of these phenomena.
- How many conception power centers are there in this home? One. I was expecting two (12 and 14 year olds). Still I found myself looking for the power center and found it in one of the bedrooms (no on a bed though).
- Could I dowse to find the Poltergeist? Yes. Was it dangerous for me to do so? No. Are you sure (I’ve seen the movies!)? Yes. It’s safe. So I dowsed for it. Wow what a merry bouncing path the rods took me and eventually into the room that Sylvia, Rob and the family where enjoying tea and cake. Without me?
Charlie (12 year girl) followed me around the room pestering me with questions. What are you doing? How does it turn? Can I have a go? The path was a butterfly one for sure and I really feel that the Geist was in the room when I entered but zipped (technical term) off when I was on its tail. Why? Fear or Fun?
I know, right in the middle of the chase, but I can rarely say no to cake and coffee. So I entered into the conversation and evening tea. The couple were a really friendly bunch so was Mike (18) the other 2 kids were out someplace. Where they scared of the goings on? Oh no, it’s a part of the family. That was good to hear although I felt Sylvia was disappointed. Why?
I learned the answer after some 5th chakra work, i.e. active listening. It seemed that Sylvia was a very religious person and any such truck was the work of a bad spirit and should be the concern of the household and her church. Look, I am a reasonable bloke but I don’t brow beat people with my beliefs and I don’t think others should either. But Sylvia was slowly becoming a bad spirit in her own right. Her ‘tchs’ were a tad annoying and frankly judgemental (of polty and the family). Since she was a friend of Rob’s I left him to deal with it and I asked Karen (the lady of the house) if I could explore some more. She agreed and with her daughter followed me around the home. What was I doing?
- I am trying to find where the geist is? I find it in the kitchen. No, there was no cold spot nor was there any kind of unusual activity. Sorry. Even Karen was disappointed but she said that sometimes days would go by and nothing would happen. I kind of respectfully stood a foot or two away from the power centre (or indeed geist) but Charlie ran in and out of the spot.
- Can you see/feel anything Charlie? No. There is nothing here. Then why are you running in and out of the spot like a sparkler?
As I watched the space, I told Karen about conception energies. These guys were really cool with the idea of energy and weird stuff. She blushed when I told her about the spot I had found. Woo hoo another confirmation!
BANG! There was a loud crash from upstairs. It frightened (in a shock kind of way) the life out of me oddly Karen and Charlie were shook up by the noise but not scared. I heard rushing from the other room and husband Danny, Rob and Sylvia were pounding for the stairs. Seconds later so was Karen and Charlie. I was a step behind them when I stopped suddenly and turned around to the innocent spot in the kitchen.
Were is the camera man when you need him? I wish I had a deer stalker had and long wooden pipe to make my transformation to Sherlock Holmes complete (I’ll swap the magnifying glass for copper rods). Whilst the rest of the house was searching the upstairs rooms I was pondering the power spot in the kitchen.
- Was the geist still there? Yes.
- Was there any other critter in the house? No.
- Did the geist cause the noise upstairs? Yes
Interesting, it seems that the geist could cause phenomena at a distance. It would be interesting to commune with this beastie. Could I do that? Yes. Was it safe? Yes. Take me to a place where it was safe to do so…right over the spot. I felt a shiver (it was definitely just me though).
Protected and yet open to impressions (Oh my god, Do I sound like one of them mediums?) I asked in my mind. What are you? I waited…nothing. Can you communicate? Nothing. What are you doing here? Why are you here? Nothing!
I really need to learn patience and since I havent I was bored of this lack of communication in minutes (if not seconds). Then I had an idea. Is this critter energetically connected to the conception energy spot? Yes. Ah. Forget the commune, let ye rods speak. I asked to be shown the energy trail and followed it out of the kitchen and around through several rooms (up and downstairs) and finally into the room with the conception energy. Honestly, I was expecting to go via Charlie but it didn’t.
Indeed something profoundly odd had occurred during my trailing of the energy. In several places the energy swirled into a spiral and then flowed on. As I walked the path it reminded me of something from my past. Like the energy here had the same taste or flavour of an energy in another time and place that had tried to bring to life old memories. How strange, no not strange, melancholy.
