Poltergeist Pet

What else is one supposed to do on a Sunday during The Quiet Time? Why, go in search of the energetic sources of poltergeist activity, of course. Obvious. Kal had kindly invited me into the situation. He had been asked by a friend to investigate the activity reported by the lady’s sister, and so with a full kit of potential useful items – candles, incense, crystals, dowsing rods – we made our way into the heart of suburbia in an ordinary modern northern English town.

The day was already shaping up to be unusual. In a huge car park covering several acres I had managed to park a few cars away to Kal’s without realising it until I got out and looked around. What a coincidence. Next, when we met up, Kal fumbled for his wallet to have a pen drop out of his coat. He swore it wasn’t his pen! Odd.

On arrival we were made welcome by a nervous family – mother, father and three teenage girls. They were used to their sister’s “white witch” ways and proclaimed themselves open-minded to what we might find. The father remained silent. We invited the assembled household to tell us some of the events that had been happening, and the discussion suddenly went into overdrive – the incidents tumbled out like a flash flood – they couldn’t speak quickly enough. All except the father, until he pressed by Kal to reveal how it had affected him. Then he was able to add a tale or two that even this self-proclaimed sceptic couldn’t explain.

They talked of two different types of incidents. In one type there were items moved around the house which only a few had witnessed directly. The first type was classic poltergeist activity at a low level. They described the dangling crystal beads on a small chandelier lampshade left swinging when no-one was around and no windows were open; knocking from upstairs that everyone downstairs could hear; a thump as though something was jumping off a bed onto the hardwood floor. On investigation nothing would be there, of course. Doors closing unexpectedly, even with deep pile carpets that would prevent explanations of draughts or wind.

The second type of behaviour was slightly more sinister. The two elder girls who had separate rooms both reported sleep paralysis symptoms, feeling like they couldn’t move. They also felt as though they had been suffocated and even choked on one occasion! Finally, one of the girls reported that she felt that she had been moved in her bed by some force. This was very recent behaviour, and from the history of the accounts it was clear that the symptoms were getting more frequent, and more powerful by the day.

Read on to find out how we investigated this series of events, and how we concluded the situation.

The Investigation

I left Kal explaining our methods while I went off to do some dowsing. Initially I worked my way through a checklist that I had created just for such an occasion. It worked through subjects such as:-

• General questions about whether there really was something energetic going on in the house, and whether this was the right time to address it
• Questions to ascertain the strength, severity and danger presented by the energetic imbalance
• How to identify the source of the energy, and what is connected to currently
• Discovering the type of energy that was being dealt with – whether terrestrial, human, spirit or extra-terrestrial
• Which method of re-balancing the energies would be most effective in these circumstances
• Some idea of how long the situation will take to rectify

Within ten minutes I had all of the preliminary information and was off discovering the two sources of the disturbances.

The First Imbalance

Everyone was still listening to Kal holding court in the front room, so I had the house to myself, and had obtained permission to go anywhere. I followed the dowsing rods out of the house and out into the garden. The rods led me to the back of a garage. Hidden out of sight was a small wooden shed. The rods poked at the door. I had to go inside, so I got the father to open the shed for me so that I could identify the source of the first imbalance. With the shed open the rods took me to a pile of stuff and I began whittling the items down until I hit upon a knitted beanie hat. This, apparently  was the source of the imbalance’s energy. Odd!

Now to find the spirit at the end of the other end of this energy trail! I set off following the rods as they took me back into the house, up into the parents room, then back down into the kitchen. The rods turned into the front room and ended at a small corner cabinet with a glass front. There were various knickknacks in the cabinet, and some small wooden boxes. I looked to the assembled group and asked them what was significant about this cabinet. “Oh, that’s the pet cemetery” the mother said, somewhat embarrassed, “It’s got all their ashes in it.” Kal and I exchanged knowing glances and smiles. “That would be that, then. ” I said. I asked if there was anything else in the house that would show me the source of the energy, and I was taken into the kitchen where the rods twirled over the top of the current dog’s bowl of food. Right. First one identified. It was the ghost of a dog. How long had the dog been energetically active in the house? Four years. That might help identify it.

Later, when I asked the family about the possibilities in terms of pets they told me the history of the family’s dogs. One dog had belonged to the grandparents of the girls, and it had been in their house for…. four years. I talked about how the energy was friendly, but if it was annoying them then perhaps it was time to being the dog to the grandparents? An apparently old discussion re-surfaced and they confessed that they had always meant to sprinkle the dog’s ashes on their grandparents’ graves. They seemed keen to do this now.

That was one set of symptoms explained (the thump and the door closing), but what about the more sinister suffocation, choking and movement? Time for more dowsing, but I’ll tell you all about the really interesting stuff in the next post.
