I know, I know…preludes are supposed to come before the beginning of a tale but for this instance I’d like to leave it for part 2 (a kind of flashback if you will). I think that I say this about most of the sites we visit, but I’m going to say it for this one too. Mitchells Fold, which is one of my favourite sites and one that I have missed not visiting in a fair while. Maybe because it is sun aligned that I have a fondness for it. That and the fact that it is an access level one (the road is only a couple of hundred metres away). Our approach to the place was an energetic one, which led us to the king-stone, which lies about 30 metres from the main circle. Whilst Gwas played with his new camera, I felt the need to prepare.
Preparation: At the cusp of visiting a sacred site it is usual for us to ask the question, “Do I need to do some preparation?” The answer is often a Yes and so we determine a location where this can be done and then go and “be” in that place for a certain amount of time. Sometimes this might be a energetically involved process, most others it is just sitting or standing in that spot. Perhaps it aligns our energy to our up coming activity? Something to investigate.
As with many of our outings, we set off with a purpose. This time I had an investigative purpose about an event that had occurred the day before (the afore mentioned prelude). In fact I had two. The secondary one was to create a connection with the land so that I could commune with a certain Goddess whilst travelling.

On my first ever visit to the USA a few years ago I tried to commune with Caileach, a unusual goddess that plagues me (in a nice way). The commune failed and upon my return and investigation, I learned that I needed a connective object. Apparently Caileach’s province did not extend that far (what kind of goddess is she!?)
So this time I wanted to be a little bit more prepared. Thus our sojourn to Mitchells Fold this evening, only a few days from my time of departure. Following our general prescribed and now familiar modus operandi. I spent some time in a place of preparation followed by sitting in a place that was suitable for commune. It took several moments for me to connect with the spirit of the place. I asked whether it would be possible to imbue a rock (that I had gained when we visited Iona) with the energy resonance of Albion and thus use it to commune with that awesome goddess Caileach. As I let this question float into the ether, a tune came to my mind…
Sing a song of sixpence,
A pocket full of rye.
Four and twenty blackbirds,
Baked in a pie.
When the pie was opened,
The birds began to sing;
Wasn’t that a dainty dish,
To set before the king?
It was a tune and accompanying words to an old English rhyme (here are the full lyrics) Where in the name of all the spirits did that come from? Was this to be the link that I needed? I got up quickly and used the dowsing rods to confirm my suspicion. Yes indeed. I could use the rock, in combination with the nursery rhyme to allow me to commune with the spirit of Caileach from the farthest shore. What an incredible and unusual thing!
