Solstice and The Death of the Sun

Hedge Druidry

I have often heard people talking about “the death of the sun” but I wondered what that meant. Initially, I took it to mean that the sun would nto be visible for three days between 22nd-25th December. A quick glance into the sky showed me that this was not true. Some other astronomical effect was being symbolised by this “death” – but what?

Solstice literally means “Sun stills”. The Solstice points mark the times when the sun stands still in its progression from the highest peak point in relation to us – The Summer Solstice – to its lowest peak point – The Winter Solstice. At the Winter Solstice the sun is neither moving further away from us on this annual path, nor is it moving back towards its peak point. For three days that distance and height is static. “Solsticial”, even.

Perhaps this excellent diagram from Walter Sanford might help explain:

In the revivalist Celtic traditions we recongise that our ancestors were also very keen to mark these times of the year, and all points in between them too. Not only did they create great megalithic calendars, but they also created amazing spaces around and within which to gather to mark those times in celebration and ritual.

I wish you all a wonderful Yuletide, and may your prayers ring true, and your hopes soar. See you when the sun is reborn!
