5 Beltane 2014 – Kercado and the New Quest

On the way back from Kerlescan I was feeling elated. I had achieved the release of the Taliesin energy into the Carnac Energy Engine. The result has been an amazing vision of the release of far-reaching, nay international, subtle energy. That energy has the purpose of strengthening the bonds between the regions of Brittany and Cornwall – between “Little Britain” and “Great Britain”. Only time and talk will tell whether such a magickal ritual will actually come to be realised in ways that I could recognise. Yet, it felt almost Gardnerian in scale, and it was something immensely positive which felt worth all of the efforts to achieve. Anything else was now a bonus, I felt.

On the walk back I remembered that there ought to be a small track leading off from the area between Kerlescan and Kermario which would lead to an idyllically situated and atmospheric tumulus called Kercado. The signs pointing to an Indian restaurant was incongruous, yet I remembered that this was indeed the way, so we set out down the old straight track towards the tumulus. How many “Ker-“s? I know! It’s confusing. But confusion is like a Thighmaster for the intellect! It’s like the “Tre-” prefix in Cornwall. Another link between these places.

Old straight track to Kercado

It was like the opposite experience of what we had just been through. The straight road dissipated all energy that we had built up or which we had become entangled with in the last hew minutes. By the end of the road I felt refreshed, released, ready to begin again. What was this trip now? A sight-seeing tour? Where would I go next with it? Oh wait! If I had just finished one quest then, was I ready to learn about the next quest? My heart quickened at the prospect. Eagerness flushed through my body.

Back to Kercado

If possible, this visit was more beautiful than the last. We had just had a rewarding ice-cream from the Indian Restaurant (don’t ask – Kal negotiated that!). As we lapped away the sun began to come out in full force for the afternoon and the clouds escaped to bother someone else for the day. We entered a well-trodden path through what felt like a secret Edwardian garden, to emerge with the tumulus lit up in its full glory and surrounded by the new verdant decor of Spring.

We don’t hang around. Kal goes one way and I go another, each following the rods, directed as they are by our unique spiritual guidance, and destined as they are to lead us to our respective fates. I am taken to a power centre on the top of tumulus, between the standing stone and a pair of out-of-place tropical-looking plants. Within minutes I feel in tune with the site and ready to see if there is anything else that can be done.

The dowsing rods lead me to another power centre which is already marked out for me by a scattering of hand-sized stones which someone has been playing with. This is more of a meditation spot, so I stand there trying to get in “the zone”. A small family of bouncy children, dogs and tick-in-the-box parents arrive and leave. Did they really stay only two minutes, or did I lose track of time? I have become adept at tuning such things out these days, and I really can ignore them as though they were invisible when I get “into it”.

The New Quest Revealed

The sunlight flicks through the branches, skimming the eyelids and making shadow plays on the inner eye. Behind that whirligig I feel myself descending deeper into the inside world – the world of meditation. I am one with the tumulus, the space, the air, the warmth – we circulate together, and then we all come together to form a new picture. This picture is projected into the inner cinema like an animation, the kind I watched as a child and was fascinated by. Here they are again, “hundreds” of years later, emerging into a mystical inner space to replay their stories for a new audience….

…a giant pulls a stone out of an existing sacred site. The sense is that a key part of the site is being destroyed, but no-one is weeping for its removal. The giant owns the right to create and destroy. He throws the stone elsewhere,. It spears through the air, twelve leagues away, and falls into soft green earth. A new sacred site is created at that spot. One question draws itself in script across the screen like a title –

“Why does the giant remove the stone and throw it again?”

I awaken to the brightness of the afternoon light. I become aware that there are other people in the area, including Kal who is standing at the King Stone in front of the tumulus’ entrance. He looks like he’s away with the faeries, so I bring myself round and begin to think about this new quest. Is that it? One question? A question about a giant? It seems so odd – so… different to other quests. Yet, if I consider it now it seems to be at the very heart of where I started this journey – to understand the purpose of sacred sites. I suppose if I can find out how they are created and destroyed, and why, then this is half the story?

I reach into my pocket and notice that there is still the pine cone that I picked up from the other side of the Kermario field of stones. I dowse for where I can ritually leave this offering and the answer is that it should go on top of the standing stone above the tumulus. Well, clearly it won’t stay there, but my work is in the offering, not in making ritual monuments to stand the test of time. That is the work of giants, whether symbolically or in reality. My task now is to find out more!

Ker in Breizh is the same as Caer in Welsh – it means fortress 🙂
