A druid is asked to work with both light and darkness. The concepts of druidry seem to me to be centred around the concept of balance. All too often the concepts of life and death are separated out into their extremities. I like to think of existence as a sphere across whose surface we move from the reflected light of life through to the shadowed dark side of death. Often clouds of darkness move over our existence, or spots of intense aliveness light it up. This particular experience made me think about a darker aspect: death.

I was thinking about how much of this blog deals with a balance of light and dark. I have skills that I used with the darker aspects just as much as I work with the light. I do healing, but it could as easily be used to harm. I do death eating, yet I use it to ground spirits for their benefit. I clean and clear sites, but that is a destruction as much as a creation. I energise people and places for their benefit, but I could as easily taint. The differentiator is only intention. I have almost exclusively chosen to work with good intention.

My wife is becoming more psychically aware. She’s doing a course on energy healing, and in a moment of inspiration she needed to find a way to get some of her questions answered. Speaking with her I said “Well you know, really it’s all about you…”. She stopped the sentence before I could go on. “‘All about yew’….’ she echoed. “Which yew tree?” she asked, “The one you visit?“. She meant The Llangernyw Yew. I knew this was the right place to take her for inspiration, so we decided to go that afternoon.

After Arthur’s Well (or close to it) we were heading out to Anglesey. I set the satellite navigation in order to get me back to some major roads that I recognised. On the way in that morning I had wanted to visit near to Llandeiniolen but we had searched in vain for it so I had given up in frustration. We had gone to visit Arthur’s Well anyway. Now, on the way back out – where did we arrive? At the damned church of course!! And I use the word ‘damned’ with intent, because no sooner had we stopped to admire the huge ancient yew trees than I got a dread feeling.

Yews at St.Michael’s

The old church at Llanddeiniolen seems to have changed its name, perhaps to disguise itself? Perhaps it is seeking to prevent visitors from finding its ancient yew trees? I have a fix on it now, though. The church is moments away from the nearby B4366 on a small back road heading to Waun. It used to be called “St Deiniol’s” but now seems to be calling itself “St.Michael’s”. It would turn out that the new name was highly appropriate to the work I was about to do.

We had been here before and so we knew there were some ancient yew trees, huge and hollowing. I had a feeling that there was some other reason I was being ‘directed’ to visit here, though. Intuition is a wonderful sense, but it doesn’t always deliver the information like a map. Sometimes the information is more like a painting.

This is the first in a short series of tales about my journey into the darkest depths of Yorkshire for the Winter Solstice this year. It was only one day’s outing, yet it managed to encompass a number of new sacred sites and to throw up a number of amazing synchronicities between the work that I did and what Kal was experiencing at the same time. I’ll tell my side of the story, and then you can compare these to Kal’s tales. I think you’ll be amazed too!

A Lesson In Patience

The journey was unspectacular except for one incident. I had arranged to meet Kal at 8:30am and despite the fact that he wouldn’t mind if I was one or two minutes late I was rushing to get there on time. Some people were driving very slowly that morning, possibly having nowhere in particular to get to for any specific time. This was rather frustrating me, and so I was getting increasingly flustered. Then, just as I was about to overtake someone ahead of me I looked up at a tall telegraph pole, and atop it was a hawk – just sitting still, and being patient. I saw the message straight away and my foot moved off the accelerator. I would get there when I got there. Phew – and relax….

Then I realised that only two minutes earlier I had been wondering whether I would see a hawk today as a sign, because I so often see them whenever I am journeying on a sacred calendar day. Well, there he was!

Thornborough By The Thorny Route

Finding Thornborough Henge should have been easy. I mean – you can hardly miss a henge in such a flat landscape! Yet it took Kal and I several attempts before we were on the correct small country road, and we had gone off track and gone through a lovely village called Kirklington before we spotted the structure in a field just beyond the village of Thornborough itself, heading towards West Tanfield. There was enough space to park outside a utility building, and soon we were walking through the impressive Thornborough Cursus – a long wide embanked structure which ended in a dog-leg right turn. What on earth was this structure for, we wondered? Soon we would find at least one purpose! I’ll come back to Kirklington later because the church in the village seemed to call to us.

For a short while we were the only ones inside the henge. The diameter of the embankment is quite impressive. It has an Avebury scale feel about it – far larger than Arbor Low, which is what we are more used to. Despite the cold dull day I felt warm and excited – something special was about to happen!

The Portal Prison

This tale occurs just before my quest to “Kill Gwas” – something which I have almost fulfilled. I was invited to go to the Llangernyw Yew in the middle of August. Kal needed some urgent answers about his future direction, and I am always looking to go out and meet ancient yew trees. We always seem to get work to do when communing with the ancient yew, and it is usually related to death energy or learning about The Underworld. No exception today.

On arrival I asked to be taken to a place where I could learn something. I was taken to a quiet spot underneath one of the smaller yew trees, and there I felt I needed to cleanse. To get rid of the worldly energies that I brought with me. In the last month I have realised that much of our work is a process of cleansing, energising and synergising (integrating the new energy to transform). I now call this process “Reconstellation” (see Reconstellation.com)

The Brain Trust

After cleansing I was taken to a power centre which was in front of a specific gravestone. As I stood in the flow of its energy I began to connect to the nearby mighty yew tree. Once in communication I was able to ask the question:

“Why am being shown this grave stone?”

I was at the grave of a lady called Gwyneth Parry I found that I will be able to heal the disease that she died of. I felt the spirit of  The Green Man come though to me, as he had done before in this graveyard. I asked to be given information about what this grave meant to me. A few seconds later the phrase “brain tumour” came to mind. I have no idea if this is correct, because I can’t validate that yet. However, what I could validate was whether I was able to energetically affect brain tumours. The astonishing result of that enquiry is … yes, I am told I can. Now I need to give that a go and see if it’s true in practise, rather than in theory. I am looking to contact some cancer charities to see if energetic healing is on their radar at all.

I asked if there was anything else I needed to consider, and The Otter card from the Wildwood Tarot came to mind. It had been the forgotten aspect of my tarot draw for the Ireland Summer Solstice trip. Now I was being invited to consider these aspects:

“Contemplating things with a considerate heart.  Learning trust.  Serving with love. Refusing to listen. Living only in the imagination.” (source: Wildblog!)

I think I understand. I would need to be single-minded about the move I was about to make – the leap of faith as I launched my new business alone. I needed to trust, to be considerate of others in this process, and to refuse to listen to the doubters who might scoff at the idea that I could make a living doing this “new age nonsense”, as many would no doubt think of it.

But the best was yet to come. That was the easy stuff! Now came something altogether more testing!

Death Eating at Llangernyw

This post is out of sync with the other posts. It should have been posted before Imbolc, but our experiences on that day took precedence. So, here it is at the start of March, over a month since it happened! Hey – that’s the way it goes. Sometimes we don’t have enough stuff to post, sometimes posts are bountiful! This post will be talking about a visit to the Llangernyw Yew tree, where I discovered something interesting about “death eating” – the process of absorbing death energies.

Previously at this yew tree I had been given the name “Death Eater“. I considered it like a Scout Badge – another tool in the plethora of skills and experiences which make up the modern druid. I had read Ross Heaven‘s books about the Sin Eater – an old and now lost profession which bears a striking resemblance to the Death Eater methodology that I had been shown, except that it had taken on a symbolic ritual involving the consumption of food. I don’t know whether practitioners still retained the concept of soul absorption.

A Hearty Meal

It was unusual to be in the churchyard in daylight. We normally visit at twilight or in the dark. Not for any nefarious purposes, just because that’s the way it pans out. Today we had daylight, and so I felt Like a normal visitor to the yew tree! I settled into a power centre next to one fo the lower branches, a familiar place which had been once again pointed out by the dowsing rods as the best position for any work today.

Soon I was in tune with the tree, and the images and messages began to come to me as I asked whether there was anything for me to learn here today. There was, and I felt the exciting ripple of new information from outside of my own thought processes, and recognised that the yew was communicating with me. What was it saying to me today?

In the second half of my second summary post I’m completing the lessons learned for the remainder of the year – that’s August to December. In this post I talk about the stag energies, energetic balance, death energy and some of the natural magickal techniques that I have been shown this year.

Stag and the Staff

  • Learned that a staff can become associated with a kind of ‘patron’ energy form
  • My new yew stag-headed staff becomes associated with the Gwyn Ap Nudd/Herne/Cernunnos energy.

  • You can reconfigure your own energy field to match that of a sacred site (especially a stone circle).

Absorbing the Gwyn energies

Becoming a Death Eater

Another night prowl. In the surprising relative warmth of a mid-October night Kal lured me into an excursion across to the western end of North Wales. Our target was, of course, The Llangernyw Yew tree. That ever-faithful dispenser of all things Otherworldly.

As we got closer that evening the mist began to form until, on our arrival, the churchyard had adopted what for most people would have been a “spooky” atmosphere. For us, it was our cloak. The moon hung wide and bright, close to its full Harvest wax, but not quite full. There was enough ambient light to move safely without torches.

A Question of Service

As I walked through the graveyard I became aware that something was different about this visit. I decided to ask some questions using the dowsing rods to see if I could figure out what that was. I began by asking:

  • Is there anything for me to gain here? NO.
  • No? Then is there something for me to give here? YES. I am here to be of service.

Interesting. This doesn’t happen very often,and probably because most sites we visit have been worked on by Kal and I already, and so rarely need energetic attention or healing. However, in this case it seemed like it was not the usual energy healing that the Llangernyw site needed, it was something different – something that I had not been called upon to do at a site before (although as it turned out it was similar to something I do regularly anyway).

I was curious, so I asked the dowsing rods to lead me to a place where I could be of service…
