The Crutch of Orthodoxy

Posted on June 13, 2014June 3, 2014 By Gwas 3 Comments on The Crutch of Orthodoxy
Hedge philosophy

You know a post is serious when there are no pictures! In this post I offer an explanation of how to construct your own theology no less! If you are interested in the foundations of paganism, then read on.

We frequently get requests from people who know we write a blog. They say things like, “..but how did you know to do this, that or the other?“.  These people are looking for guidance, and we are more than happy to offer our experiences up for them to consider. Yet some people want to go further. They say things like: “How do you do this, that or the other?“. These are requests for orthodox teachings. Here are my opinions on the relative merits of oxthodoxy on a seeker’s path.

Following The Rules

Orthodoxy essentially means following the rules, or taking a path that has already been trodden before. Someone whom one considers to have been a person of more spiritual value than yourself has been out into the spiritual world(s) and has come back with a description of the way in which that world operates. They have perhaps described the way it works, the way they perceived it, told you their tales and maybe even offered you the benefit of their experience. They might have come back with warnings – don’t say this to that, don’t do this in there, etc. The value of orthodoxy is generally supposed to be that the new seeker learns from the mistakes and the wrong paths of those who have gone before. Progress should be faster, easier, further, deeper. The devout and orthodox religios seeker should be the most enlightened. How does that fir with your experience of such people?

If this were the case, that strict orthodoxy reaps the best rewards, then after several thousand years of the prevailing orthodox religion wouldn’t we all be enlightened by now? Of course, we have free will, and we are entitled to ignore the prevailing wisdom and teachings. Thus, we are bound to continue to make mistakes, continue to throw impediments on to the path to our spiritual freedom. So claim the guardians of such teachings and the preservers of religious structures.

I have a different opinion to offer.

12 Beltane 2014 – Tarot Reflected

Posted on June 12, 2014June 12, 2014 By Gwas No Comments on 12 Beltane 2014 – Tarot Reflected
Tarot

You may remember that before we went to Brittany I had done a tarot reading to divine to which aspects of the journey I might need to be pay special attention. Having reflected on those cards and the events that happened, I feel I can now reveal the three “missing” interpretations that I deliberately left … Read More “12 Beltane 2014 – Tarot Reflected” »

Dowsing, Edge Wizardry, Quests, Trees

Welcome back to Albion. We had arrived back from our Brittany and Beltane pilgrimage late on Saturday afternoon. I was pooped! A long hot shower and off to bed was my own recommended therapy. And as prescribed that is what I did. Dreams however had other ideas. The main theme seemed to be interlocking and … Read More “Magician who Creates Worlds Beltane 2014 19” »

The Dragon incident Beltane 2014 – 18

Quickie

A recurring theme that has haunted my adventures for the past couple of years is Dragons. Personally I blame it on Ireland. In any case I was hoping that they didn’t rear their head in Brittany and my prayers were pretty much answered until the very last-minute of the very last site visit. We were … Read More “The Dragon incident Beltane 2014 – 18” »

11 Beltane 2014 – Faeries and Dragons Finale

Hedge Druidry
In the final post from Brittany I reveal how working with Faery can seem like a double-edged sword. Kal has already spoken about his double-dealings, and has set the scene. I too have once been in this forest and was tracked by a mischievous sprite who attached himself to me making me disorientated and leading me away from where I wanted to be. Let’s say, The Forest of Broceliande has a track record. Nevertheless, I don’t hold any previous behaviour as a template, only as an advisory.

So it is that as I begin to walk down the hill from the Earth Giant’s Lair and into the heart of The Valley of No Return. On my way down I spot a Faery Glade. Its special qualities impinged themselves upon my awareness, that’s the only way I can describe it. I knew I had to visit. It was like a calling, or rather, an invitation to a friend’s house – a friend who was cooking apple pie. So I once more split from Kal, and I head off up to the summit where the energy is strongest.

Footloose in a Faery Glen

Once in the midst of the glade I need to take my shoes off and feel the cooling and grounding qualities of the moss floor. Being seated I am close to the intricate and foreign biodiversity of the plant life around me, and soon I have protection up and can relax into the moment. I can then begin to sense the aliveness, the sheer activity around me, the curiosity, the testing of the protection, the recognition of my energy, and the interactive flows as subtle energy passes between the world of human and faery kind.

That interaction would have sufficed for me, but it seems that faery folk have other ideas, and they begin to form a suggestion to me. As an “honoured guest” (their term) I could open a portal to Faery knowledge, if I choose to do what is required. Hmmm… I’m slightly suspicious, having had interactions with Faery folk before, not all of it beneficial. Cagily, warily, with a good connection to my spirit guide for assistance, I ask, “What would be required to establish such a mutually beneficial link?”

I have to kiss a rock at a special place deeper in the forest. I have to kiss a rock? OK, doesn’t sound too onerous! I accept the offer. I hang around for a while with full protection up, just feeling the reaction to my response, and seeing if I can sense anything else. The only feeling is an excitement amongst the faery folk – an excitement that I am going to do as they have challenged me to do. It all feels “right”. I thank them for their interest, and put my shoes back on. Let’s get going! There are rocks to kiss!!

Wood of the Fay Beltane 2014 – 17

Faery, Quests, Signs and Synchronicity, Trees

In previous posts I have mentioned that I have a Faery Taint. Don’t ask what it is, I don’t know. But on our trip to Brittany I have bumped into more Fay than in all my years of experience put together.  Why this is, I have yet to discover. Certainly this part of the world … Read More “Wood of the Fay Beltane 2014 – 17” »

Courage and the Golden Key Beltane 2014 – 16

Faery, Glyphs and Wards, Pilgrimage, Signs and Synchronicity

I am convinced without a shadow of a doubt that Brittany is a land of the Fay. Although I don’t get the sense that they are the same as what one might find in Ireland (I wonder if Fay have country divisions?) As I walked deeper into the woods (Gwas had vanished on some quest … Read More “Courage and the Golden Key Beltane 2014 – 16” »
