Sun and Moon Glyphs for the Merlin Staff

The Moel-Ty-Uchaf stone circle high above the village of Llandrillo in North Wales is one of the toughest tests of determination and stamina. It takes around 40 minutes of relentless climbing up a very steep gradient to reach it. Yet, when a circle calls – we heed it! In this story I found that patience is rewarded, and that glyphs can unlock energetic forces at a site.

The agenda for this sunny Saturday outing was simple – two sites – Llandrillo and Dinas Emrys. Surely we’d be home for mid-afternoon? Ha! The Universe had other plans. In our way we had a panoply of tardiness-generating obstacles:-

  • roadworks on every major highway between us and the sites
  • weekend wanderers doing 30mph on major trunk roads
  • caravans and farm traffic using the main roads

It was an object lesson in giving in to the inevitable slowness. A journey that I had previously clocked at 25 minutes on my motorcycle took us 1 hour  45 minutes today. So far this year we are both learning that Patience is the watchword.

However, there was the promise of obtaining some vital information: I needed to find out the four glyphs that were the Essence of The Merlin Staff. They needed to be discovered before the Summer Solstice, and then I would have to get them carved onto the staff at some point this year.

The way up was hard. It always is. Yet we were in good spirits. We only needed to stop a couple of times to re-gain our breath and then we were approaching the circle in good spirits. Unusually, we both recovered from the climb almost instantly. It was a remarkable, so we remarked upon it. Now for the work to begin!

The Yew of the Four Glyphs

On a delightfully warm and sunny Summer’s evening the intrepid duo ventured forth into the heartlands of Northern Wales in search of inspiration. Our destination was the ancient and venerable Yew tree of Llangernyw.

The environs of Llangernyw were beginning to flourish with a beautiful display of wild flowers.

We entered the graveyard, drinking in the sounds, smells and sights of Summer as though to store them in memory for the ‘leaner times’. As we began to follow the dowsing rods I noticed that Kal was following my footsteps exactly! He was chuckling to himself as he realised that his path to the perfect spot was exactly the same as mine. How amusing! At that moment a chorus of birdsong arose from the surrounding trees – a welcoming chorus of delighted cheeps and warbles which almost drowned out any thoughts!

When Formalities Are Dropped

We both came to a halt at the same time and in the same spot. It was just inside a clump of young yew trees with fresh growth at their tips. The spot on which we were stood was lain with a carpet of damp grass cuttings, and this made me think of a time when I had stood on other grass clippings and had an encounter with the spirit of the Green Man [see this post].

There was no need for either of us to ‘cleanse’ today. For some reason we were already cleansed of outer worldly energies, and ready for work. The spot with the grass clippings was a place for us to simply tune our energies to place. It was simply about getting into the right energy state.

As we walked up the sloping path towards the grand old yew tree, following the dowsing rods to find the bets place, I felt like tree knew I was coming. Indeed, although I stopped at the perimeter of its canopy before entering, there wasn’t the usual ‘resistance’ or barrier in place. I realised that I didn’t need to ask permission to enter now. Perhaps we had become such good friends over the years? The balance of ‘power’ had shifted somehow, and was much more equal now, I felt.

Llangernyw Yew - June 15 (10)
One day I’ll get a good picture of this tree without ‘misting’!

I had two purposes for being here this evening:

  • to see if I could help my wife get through a forthcoming exam, and
  • to see if there was any work I could do to discover the Essence of the Merlin Staff

Further the Re-Wilding

I recently took part in some extra-curricular meditating. It’s the best kind. During one of my Nature meditation groups one of the participants had once though she saw a door outlined in a rock face as she was meditating. The ace meditation teacher John David Kirby [Facebook page] had been really taken by this idea, and had suggested that anyone interested in doing a meditation on “The Portal” should hang around after out meditation session and we could explore this potential way into The Otherworld. So we arranged to do that.

Out of the group, there were four of us who stayed for the meditation, and coincidentally it was on the evening of a full moon.

Full Moon - June
The actual real full moon with real-life clouding action

What’s through…The Arched Window?

We lit a small controlled fire to take the chill off. Once this had died down and the chatter had subsided we naturally got into a meditative posture. I had dowsed around for the best place for me to do this work, and had offered my dowsing rods for other to use do the same. Now we all had our ideal places in front of the rock portal.

Minutes later I turned my meditative state of mind to the door itself. The outline of the door’s edge seemed to glow as the flames gently subsided to a flicker. A wire-frame shape formed – it was like a 3-D arch – the poles of a small camping tent. Then the door opened up and I stepped inside.

In the portal was a space big enough to hold me standing. As I stood there the floor disappeared revealing a stairway down inside the bole of a tree. I recognised this image from previous meditations, and I walked down the stairs going deeper into The Otherworld with each step.

At the bottom of the stairs was a small door. Somehow, like Alice In Wonderland, I shrank to fit through the tiny door that was carved into the base of the tree, and as it opened a fantastical cartoon world appeared before me. I knew it well, as I had been here many times before. But what would be waiting for me this time?

Creating a meditation space

I am now in the second round of my set of 21 free nature-themed outdoor meditations. I had taken a break in May in order to take stock of what we had accomplished already, and to see who wanted to go around the cycle again with me.  I was heartened by the feedback on the Spirit In Nature Meetup group and I decided to restart the meditations in June.

I had one important change to make: the location. I needed a new space to work in. Towards the end of the previous sessions we had been interrupted by dogs, walkers, kids playing and climbers, not to mention having to clear up the detritus of people who used the space as a party venue. There was too much activity in the large open quarry, and something no longer felt “right” about the place as a space for meditation. It felt like we were always counteracting the chaotic energy when we came to the site, and this affected people’s ability to settle, focus and let go.

I found a new place nearby – a small dumping ground that had been left to re-wild. I had potential, so I set about preparing the site for use.

Creating a Healer at Avebury

After Belas Knap in Gloucestershire where would a journeying Hedge Druid and Edge Wizard go next? Why, to Avebury, of course. Er….right. Because it’s an hour and half in the wrong direction! Nevertheless, somehow Kal persuaded me that there was time and a good enough reason. I don’t know what it was, but it seemed good at the time.

Actually, what started as a good excuse to go to the Avebury village bookshop turned out to be a very revealing and educational affair. I learned a lot about the notion and initiation of becoming a healer, and now I know exactly what I will be trying to do on my next visit. Let me explain how Avebury stone circle can be used to initiate an energetic healer!

Avebury - May 15 (3)

98, 36, and 12

I dowsed my way around the circle beginning at the bookshop. Having a bag of books in one hand I was reliant on one-handed dowsing, which required a little “re-programming” to understand the responses. My starting directive was “Take me to somewhere where I can learn something that will help me develop.” You never know what you’ll get with such an open question! I suppose I could have asked “What is the sound of one hand dowsing?”

Source: Hyperstition web site

There may originally have been 98 stones in the outer ring around the smaller inner circles. Many missing stones have now been marked with concrete posts, but some go unmarked. Using the rods I moved around the outer circle, from stone to stone, often missing stones out or by-passing places where stones may have been. Where the rods indicated I should stop, I did so, and meditated on that spot. What I found was that I began to get visions, or rather one vision which became ever-more complex and overlaid with more information as I moved from stone to stone.

What was revealed to me was a geometrical construction of energy which described a method of initiating a person to become a subtle energy healer.

Belas Knap, Chakras and The Merlin Staff

On a particularly sunny day Kal and I planned to venture forth into the world in search of adventure. We had a plan, of course. A rough plan. I wanted to go to Belas Knap long barrow, which I first and last visited in the autumn of 2013. I had been thinking about how I could achieve my quest: to find the essence of The Merlin Staff – an oak staff in preparation, but yet to be created. The ‘thinking’ involved letting myself be guided to the image of Belas Knap. On rational reflection it seemed to have all the right ingredients: I had met with Merlin there, brandishing a staff and inviting me to call down lightning.

Belas Knap Long Barrow - May 15 (3)
Belas Knap is at the top of a steep hill

This was Kal’s first visit, yet for both of us we were not allowed immediate entry to the site. Both of us had to go through an extensive cleansing process by waiting at various power spots until our energies were sufficiently re-attuned. I had to sit on the mossy tree seat which is conveniently located in a shaded area next to the site before I was allowed to proceed.

Another regular feature of our site visits is the entry point. Finding the correct entrance is crucial to a positive experience. It’s not advisable just to assume that the people who administer the site know the “right” entrance. This is specially true if you intend to work with the site on any energetic level. The best experiences are those where the site’s energy is respected as part of your work.

Using dowsing rods I was taken to a part of the stone wall almost directly in front of the “false entrance”. The exact spot was kindly pointed out by two strands of tall grass which showed me exactly where I should climb over. If there had been anyone else there it would have looked odd when there was a perfectly serviceable entrance only twenty feet away!

My entrance to Belas Knap

Did Belas Knap change to accommodate my current quest, or was I directed to come to the perfect place to be in order to get my questions answered? I don’t know, but when I began to ask if I could get answers related to the essence of the Merlin Staff then I was taken on a sinewy path to the back of the mound. There I sat out of the wind in a little oasis of calm with warm sunshine on me. Soon my question became interactive as I began to reveal the way the site was laid out and how that related to my own energy body.

Protection – The Sword and The Stone

Protection – The Sword and The Stone

It’s not every day that you get trained in exorcism. Not that I felt I needed that much training. I have recounted some (but by no means all) of the stories of encounters that I have had with both the more troublesome and ill-intentioned spirits that inhabit the subtle and invisible realms. Regular readers and clients will testify to that.

Nevertheless, I was “accompanying a minor”. My wife, M, is learning about energy healing and as a off-shoot, an adjunct and a bolt-on to the course two experienced practitioners, Dan Khan and Mimi McNally, were offering a day’s tuition on Entities, Exorcism and Energetic Protection. It would take place under the banner of The Lightning Path at the Regent’s Park University in London too – a beautiful building next to the park itself. Sold.

Compare and Contrast

I have also recently developed on the same subject, but with a different focus. My course is designed to offer some very practical methods to deal with such issues. There is time in my course to learn, practise and develop techniques over a number of weeks. The Lightning Path course was different – it was a one-day crash course that touched every topic it could in as much depth as possible in the time available.

I have to say – they did an incredible job considering the restrictions! Clearly competent teachers whose approaches blended perfectly, they guided us through gently, carefully, but at breakneck speed into the world of ” unknown intentions“. Their emphasis was mainly on how malevolence, frustration and deceit could be transformed through an energetic shift from dark to light, dense to dispersed, and low to high vibration.
